Beckhoff doesn't provide two separate runtimes. For the execution of your Beckhoff software, there is just the TwinCAT runtime, and it's the same runtime that is running on Beckhoff's most powerful 24+ core CPUs as your single-core virtual machine. Let me get this straight once and for all: There is NO SUCH THING as a TwinCAT simulator. Let me rephrase: if you need a PLC at all times to test your automation software, your software development practices and processes most likely suck.Ī misconception in the automation industry is that running TwinCAT software without a real Beckhoff PLC will be running a TwinCAT simulator. Guess how many PLCs we bought from Beckhoff during development? Zero. Once I was involved in a project that involved 100+ Beckhoff PLCs. NOT.A.SINGLE.PROJECT required me to buy a PLC from Beckhoff to develop and verify most of the functionality. All of my clients projects have been developed and tested on either my desktop or a VM locally or in the cloud. You can develop AND run the vast majority of your software without any PLC, directly on your laptop or even better, a virtual machine. Even then, you will most likely not need it until very late in the project. Don't buy any hardware until you're committing to a real project. Most of you have asked me which Beckhoff PLC should I buy to learn Beckhoff programming? My answer has and will always be the same.
